French Onion Soup Burgers are juicy beef burgers topped with caramelized onions, melted cheese, and rich savory flavors inspired by classic French onion soup.
Ingredients
- 500 g ground beef
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp sugar
- 120 ml beef broth
- 120 g sliced Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 4 burger buns
- Butter for toasting buns (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and sugar, cooking slowly for 20–25 minutes until deeply caramelized.
- Deglaze the pan with beef broth and simmer for 3–4 minutes until slightly reduced. Set aside.
- In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Form the mixture into 4 equal burger patties.
- Cook burgers on a grill or skillet over medium-high heat for 4–5 minutes per side until desired doneness.
- Top each burger with caramelized onions and cheese.
- Cover and cook for 1–2 minutes until cheese melts.
- Toast burger buns with butter if desired.
- Assemble burgers and serve hot.

- Cook onions low and slow for best flavor.
- Serve with fries or a green salad.
- You can add a splash of balsamic vinegar to the onions for extra depth.
