Description
Old-fashioned rice pudding is a classic, creamy dessert made by slowly simmering rice with milk, sugar, and warm spices until rich and comforting.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup white rice
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the rice, milk, sugar, and salt.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture begins to simmer.
- Reduce heat to low and continue cooking for 30–35 minutes, stirring often, until the rice is tender and the pudding is thick and creamy.
- Stir in the butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and raisins if using.
- Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes, then remove from heat.
- Let cool slightly before serving; the pudding will thicken more as it cools.
Notes
- Stir frequently to prevent the milk from scorching.
- You can substitute part of the milk with cream for a richer pudding.
- Serve warm or chilled, topped with extra cinnamon if desired.
