Description

Unstuffed Cabbage Casserole is an easy, comforting one-dish meal that delivers all the flavors of classic stuffed cabbage rolls without the extra work, made with ground meat, tender cabbage, rice, and tomato sauce.


Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 400 g canned diced tomatoes
  • 240 ml tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 120 g shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft.
  4. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add ground meat and cook until browned; drain excess fat.
  6. Stir in cabbage and cook for 5–7 minutes until slightly softened.
  7. Add cooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and oregano. Mix well.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  9. Top with shredded cheese if using.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  11. Uncover and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until bubbly.
  12. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can use brown rice or cauliflower rice as a substitute.
  • This casserole freezes well for meal prep.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste with chili flakes for heat.
