Description

Cheesy Italian Sub Casserole is a hearty baked sandwich-inspired dish loaded with layers of seasoned meats, melty cheeses, peppers, and Italian herbs on a soft bread base. This family-friendly casserole delivers all the flavors of a classic Italian sub in a warm, comforting bake.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian bread, cubed
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 8 oz turkey pepperoni, sliced
  • 8 oz turkey salami, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sliced banana peppers
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add onion and bell pepper and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  5. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  6. Add ground beef and cook until browned; drain excess fat if necessary.
  7. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
  8. Stir in turkey pepperoni and turkey salami and cook for 1 minute.
  9. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  10. Sprinkle mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan cheeses over the top.
  11. Whisk together eggs and milk in a bowl.
  12. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
  13. Top with banana peppers.
  14. Let stand for 10 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.
  15. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and set in the center.
  16. Rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  17. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • Day-old Italian bread works best because it absorbs the custard without becoming mushy.
  • Provolone cheese provides authentic Italian sub flavor.
  • Add mushrooms or black olives for extra toppings.
  • Serve with marinara sauce on the side if desired.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4 days.
