Description
Creamy French Onion Beef Rice Skillet is a rich and comforting one-pan dinner featuring seasoned ground beef, tender rice, caramelized onion flavors, creamy sauce, and melted cheese inspired by classic French onion soup.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in uncooked rice, thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour in beef broth, condensed French onion soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover and cook for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Stir in heavy cream and half of the shredded cheese.
- Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top.
- Cover for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with parsley and serve warm.
Notes
- Gruyère cheese gives the most authentic French onion flavor.
- For extra richness, add an additional splash of cream before serving.
- Brown rice may be substituted but requires additional cooking time and liquid.
- Mushrooms make an excellent addition to the skillet.
- Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4 days.
