Description

Creamy French Onion Beef Rice Skillet is a rich and comforting one-pan dinner featuring seasoned ground beef, tender rice, caramelized onion flavors, creamy sauce, and melted cheese inspired by classic French onion soup.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  5. Stir in uncooked rice, thyme, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Pour in beef broth, condensed French onion soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
  7. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
  8. Cover and cook for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  9. Stir in heavy cream and half of the shredded cheese.
  10. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top.
  11. Cover for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Gruyère cheese gives the most authentic French onion flavor.
  • For extra richness, add an additional splash of cream before serving.
  • Brown rice may be substituted but requires additional cooking time and liquid.
  • Mushrooms make an excellent addition to the skillet.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4 days.
